Internet and Search Engines

  • The first time I accessed internet was in the year 2006, since then I visited a numerous websites for various purposes. We all know the best Search Engine today is perhaps Google. But we should also know that there are other Search Engines which can solve our requirements better sometimes.

Information available on the Internet can be searched using tools available on the Internet called Search engines, meta-search engines and subject/virtual directories.

Search Engines: They maintain their own databases of Web pages. You can type the keyword to be searched and the Search engine returns you the links to related web pages from their database.

Meta-Search Engines: Unlike a Search engine, a meta-search engine does not have its own database. Instead, when you submit a keyword in the search box, a meta search engine quickly and superficially visits several individual search engines at once. It does so by transmitting the keyword simultaneaously to various search engines, which search for the keyword in their own databases and return the results to the meta-search engines.

Subject Directories or Virtual Directories: These are the directories maintained by individuals as against the databases that are maintained by electronic spiders in search engines. Individuals review and select sites for inclusion in their directories.
